The residents love their little "down home" hardware store where the prices are very competitive to those of the large stores of Ventura.

Tucked in at the base of the Matilija Canyon, The Deer Lodge Tavern is reminiscent of a different era. Wood and stone blend to create this landmark bar and restaurant. Once the last outpost of an untamed wilderness, it now shines as a popular gathering place for both locals and visitors alike. An area next to and bordering Meiners Oaks is a 1,591 acre preserve which was, in June 2003, purchased by the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy with a grant of $3.1 million. The historic property lies in the western half of the Ojai Valley and is bordered by three miles of the Ventura River. Once the territory of grizzly bears, this ranch and river property is still home to a wide variety of wildlife including black bear, mountain lion, bobcat, badger, coyote and mule deer, to name a few. Abundant food, shelter, space and water make this a key habitat for local wildlife. In the wet months, frogs, salamanders and other amphibians abound in the seasonal creeks. During the highest stream flows, a few remaining endangered steelhead trout make their way up and down the three miles of river on the property. Birds of prey such as Great Horned Owls and a variety of hawks soar over the oak savanna, river bottom and under the open, oak canopy of Wills Canyon. Another part of Meiners Oaks area is the Oaks Meadow Preserve, which is also a project of OVLC and is comprised of 58 acres of Valley and Live Oaks, grasslands and wetlands. It is one of the last remaining grasslands on the east side of the Ventura River with extensive views of the surrounding Los Padres National Forest. The Preserve is connected to three other oak woodlands properties that the Conservancy is attempting to protect. Ultimately, the Conservancy's goal is to protect critical wildlife corridors between the Preserve and the Ventura River and San Antonio Creek Meiners Oak, home of the Oak Grove School Oak Grove School, located at 220 West Lomita was founded in 1975 by Jiddu Krishnamurti, a renowned teacher of the 20th century whose educational philosophy focused on academically strong, inquiry-based learning in a noncompetitive environment, respect for the nature and an understanding of one's self and the global community.
