Oak Grove School was founded in 1975 by Jiddu Krishnamurti, a renowned teacher of the 20th century whose educational philosophy focused on academically strong, inquiry-based learning in a noncompetitive environment, respect for the nature and an understanding of one’s self and the global community. If a young person could be aware of conditioning and beliefs concerning prejudice, nationality, religion, race, and tradition, Krishnamurti explained, then he or she might become a fully intelligent human being for whom right action will follow.
It was with this foundation that he created the Oak Grove School. Like other schools he founded in England and India, Oak Grove was to be a place where intelligence is nurtured and encouraged to flower: where students, staff, and parents explore together what it means to learn and to live in relationship with each other and the world. Today, of the nine schools founded by Krishnamurti, seven are in India, one in Brockwook Park, England, and the Oak Grove School in Ojai.
The original enrollment was three young students, taught by two staff. As the younger students and enrollment grew, upper grades were added, resulting in the construction of the elementary school complex in 1977, and culminating in the addition of the high school and boarding facility in 1984. Today, nearly 200 students and 40 staff members learn together in an atmosphere nourished by mutual respect.
The intent of the Oak Grove School is for students to develop the skills necessary to function in society, and at the same time to develop a foundation for inquiry into perennial questions of human life. Consistent with the views of its founder, the school does not subscribe to any creed or ideology. Rather, it assists students in the open-minded investigation of enduring human issues.
